Seventy-five years after Independence, India has much to be proud of. We are both the world’s biggest democracy and the fastest-growing large economy. Yet, we also face profound challenges that hinder both individual well-being and aggregate growth, including education and skills, health and nutrition, public safety, justice, social protection, and jobs. Drawing from his highly-acclaimed book Accelerating India’s Development: A State-Led Roadmap for Effective Governance, Karthik Muralidharan will speak on the critical importance of investing in better governance and state capacity in achieving national development goals. Through his analysis of India’s governance challenges, especially in delivering essential public services, he will highlight how these are limiting India’s development. Drawing on a wealth of research and practical insights, he will share actionable, evidence-based strategies, emphasizing state-level reforms as critical for India’s advancement. The talk will offer insights into how effective public service delivery can drive economic growth and societal well-being, and offer practical, evidence-based strategies to accelerate India’s development, a crucial event for policymakers, scholars, citizens, and anyone dedicated to fostering national progress and interest in the future of India’s development.

The talk by Prof. Karthik Muralidharan will be followed by a discussion with Manish Sabharwal, moderated by Pranay Kotasthane, and a Q&A session with the audience.

Speakers

Karthik Muralidharan Professor, University of California

Karthik Muralidharan is the Tata Chancellor’s Professor of Economics at the University of California San Diego. His research spans public finance and development economics, with a focus on improving education, health, welfare, and public service delivery, and has been published in many of the world’s leading academic journals. He has also actively engaged in policy advising and capacity building in India at both Central and state government levels and in public communication of research insights through several op-eds and podcasts. His global TED talk will be released soon. Professor Muralidharan is also the co-founder and scientific director of the Centre for Effective Governance of Indian States, a non-profit organization that works with multiple state governments across India to improve state capacity, governance, and service delivery. Born and raised in India, he holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard, an MPhil from Cambridge (UK), and a PhD in economics from Harvard.

Manish Sabharwal Chairman & Co-founder, Teamlease Services

Manish is Chairman and co-founder of Teamlease Services, India’s largest staffing and human capital firm. Teamlease has over 140,000 employees in 5000 cities and is implementing India’s first vocational university and national PPP apprenticeship program. In 1996 he co-founded India Life, an HR outsourcing company that was acquired in 2002 by a listed US company called Hewitt Associates. Consequently, he was CEO of Hewitt Outsourcing (Asia) based in Singapore for two years. Manish is a member of the National Skill Mission, Central Advisory Board of Education and has served on various policy committees for education, employment and employability. He serves as a Director on the Board of the Reserve Bank of India, is a trustee of the New India Foundation offers fellowships for writing books about post-1947 India, and is a columnist for Indian Express. He got his MBA from The Wharton School and is an alumnus of Shriram College, Delhi and Mayo College, Ajmer.

Pranay Kotasthane Deputy Director, Takshashila Institution

Pranay Kotasthane is deputy director of the Takshashila Institution. Pranay’s current research includes high-tech geopolitics and the politics of radically networked societies. Pranay teaches public policy, international relations, and public finance at Takshashila’s graduate and post-graduate programmes. Pranay co-writes Anticipating the Unintended, a newsletter on public policy ideas and frameworks and co-hosts Puliyabaazi, a popular Hindi-Urdu podcast on politics and policy and technology. He has co-edited India’s Marathon: Reshaping the Post-Pandemic World Order. A concept he wants to popularise is societism — the idea that the society, like markets and States, has a distinct role in any human community. Pranay has contributed opinion pieces and essays in several Hindi and English outlets. Pranay started his public policy career at the Takshashila Institution in March 2014 and was an alumnus of the fifth cohort of Takshashila’s Graduate Course in Public Policy (GCPP). He was conferred with the Gomtibai Govindji Award for the best student of his batch. He also had stints with two Fortune 500 companies working on integrated circuit design for mobile processors after that.
