Event Description

Join artist Prarthna Singh for a walkthrough of her work in Grip, Hold, Pin. Through photography, Singh explores the intersections of gender, identity, and nationhood, often turning her lens towards lives shaped by resilience and quiet acts of resistance.

In this exhibition, she documents the lives of women wrestlers, tracing their everyday routines, relationships, and aspirations beyond the arena. Her images reveal how strength is negotiated through the body, labour, and care, while reflecting on the larger social and political landscapes that shape contemporary India.

This event is in conjunction with programming for Grip, Hold, Pin. 

Prarthna Singh
 Prarthna’s work explores questions of feminine identity, especially as it intersects with the fraught politics of nationalism in contemporary India. Her images reflect on India’s economic and political trajectory, drawing an arc between precariousness and vulnerability. These narratives are constructed in tandem with India’s own idiosyncrasies. Singh’s work renders visible the emotional and political landscapes shaping India.

Her self-published book, Har Shaam Shaheen Bagh: One Hundred Days of Resistance, was named one of the Best Photobooks of 2022 by LensCulture. She has been published in TIME, The Guardian, BBC, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, Granta, London Review of Books, and The Economist.

Her work has been exhibited widely, including at the National Portrait Gallery (London), the Thessaloniki PhotoBiennale (Greece), the Chennai Photo Biennale (Chennai), SOAS Gallery (London), Les Rencontres d’Arles (France), and the Jaipur Centre for Arts (Jaipur).
