Event Description

Join us for a conversation around writer and publisher Sudhanva Deshpande’s new book, Imposter: The Playful Subversions of Orijit Sen.

Spanning four decades of Orijit Sen’s practice, the book traces the artist’s journey through comics, graphic storytelling, political satire, design and visual culture. From River of Stories, India’s first graphic novel, to the many forms his work has taken since, Sen has continually played with the possibilities of the image and the page. Moderated by Lakshmi Karunakaran, the conversation reflects Orijit’s practice, influences and experiments, and the ideas behind the book.

Sudhanva Deshpande
Writer

Sudhanva Deshpande is a theatre director, theatre and film actor, publisher and author. He is the author of Halla Bol: The Death and Life of Safdar Hashmi.

Orijit Sen
Speaker

Orijit Sen is an Indian graphic artist, designer, muralist, artivist, and social documentarian. His expansive body of work includes murals, public art, comics, and graphic design, and has been extensively published, exhibited and installed in India as well as internationally. His groundbreaking River of Stories (1994), considered the country’s first graphic novel, laid the foundation for India’s contemporary comics culture. Grounded in political insight and keen observation, Orijit’s art reimagines real events and lived experiences as fantastical, dreamlike narratives that provoke dialogue through wit and satirical humour.

Lakshmi Karunakaran
Moderator

Lakshmi Karunakaran is an art educator and development professional working at the intersection of education, children’s literature, publishing, libraries and the arts, with a particular interest in how stories, images and cultural practice shape the way we see the world.
