Event Description

Knowing is Doing: Understanding Artist Rights, is an interactive workshop that equips artists, students, and cultural practitioners with the knowledge and tools to navigate the legal, ethical, and professional realities of artistic practice. Through collaborative discussions, speculative role-playing and practical resources, participants explore authorship, contracts, copyright, labour, and advocacy, leaving with greater confidence to protect both their work and themselves. 

This session is conducted as part of our engagements for the MAP Youth Collective. The MAP Youth Collective is a community for young people (18-25 year olds) to engage with the arts and culture sector. The collective is for, of and by young people — to explore our shared identities and interests through art.

Bavisha Varigonda
Bavisha Varigonda is an independent curator, researcher, archivist, and arts professional whose practice explores artistic labour, archives, cultural infrastructure, and artist rights in India. Working across exhibitions, public programmes, research, and publishing, she is interested in how knowledge can become a tool for collective care and institutional change. She is the founder of the Knowing is Doing: Artist Rights initiative, a research-led project that develops workshops and practical resources to empower artists with accessible legal and professional knowledge. Bavisha has worked with galleries, private art collectors, archives,  and independent art initiatives across India, and her practice is grounded in creating collaborative, accessible, and critically engaged learning experiences.
