Madras Cafe has come under a cloud of controversy reportedly after Tamil Nadu based activist groups claimed that the film has distorted history and portrayed Tamilians in poor light.

The film, starring John Abraham and Nargis Fakhri, is a political-espionage thriller and is set in India and Sri Lanka, during the 1980s and 1990s and reportedly deals with the incidents leading up to former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination and the aftermath.

Abraham, who is also the producer of the film, denies that the film is anti-Tamil and has insisted that it is a non-glitzy take on an Indian Army Officer appointed by RAW to disrupt a rebel group in Sri Lanka.
