BBMP to launch garbage-free ward programme

This Wednesday, the BBMP’s garbage-free ward programme will be launched in 22 wards.

Commissioner M Lakshminarayana and senior officers have been deputed as nodal officers to ensure that the decisions are taken without any delay.

These officers will coordinate with people who are associated with implementing segregation at public sources, door-to-door collection (pourakarmikas), pourakarmikas’ salary (garbage contractors) and other issues.

“In the coming days, we will extend this to all 198 wards,” Lakshminarayana said.

BBMP solid waste management expert committee member N S Ramakanth said  thatn they are requesting public not to mix sanitary waste with wet or dry waste.

Ramakanth said that the pourakarmikas will take sanitary waste to nearby BBMP hospitals or private hospitals, which in turn, will hand it over to authorised agencies.

“We don’t have data on the quantity of sanitary waste collected from houses. We have asked these agencies to collect sanitary waste and provide data. After one month, the BBMP shall pay these agencies accordingly,” Ramakanth said.
