With an eye on safety of women in buses, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has installed CCTV cameras in 500 buses and aims to complete installation in its entire fleet soon.

The process began in late 2013, due to reports of women passengers being harassed by male co-passengers, which increased concerns over women's safety in buses.

There will be two cameras installed in each bus - one in the front and one at the back. There will be no live streaming of real-time monitoring, but up to 15 days of content will be stored in a black box. The black box can be accessed as and when required. Each device will have 48 hours of back-up power.

Presently, only buses that ply from Kempegowda bus station and Shivajinagar bus stand have CCTV cameras installed. Going forward, all buses, including bus stops and even public places where women passengers board buses will have CCTVs installed.
