Festive garbage piles up in the city

Despite the efforts made by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) to control pollution incidental to the immersion of Ganesha idols at Ulsoor Lake, heaps of garbage were seen piled up at the lake after Monday.

The BBMP evidently did not equip the lake premises with sufficient manpower and trucks to clear the garbage that piled up post-celebration.

R Udaykumar, corporator from Ulsoor ward blamed the organisers of various Ganesha festival committees for the mess.

He said they left the Ganesha idols on the road near Ulsoor Lake, not caring for the cleanliness of the lake and it’s surroundings.

“We had to immerse idols that had dissolved partially due to the heavy rain on Monday night. It was the duty of the organisers to bring the idols up to the immersion pond. It became tough for the volunteers to lift partially-dissolved idols,’’ he said.

According to BBMP authorities, seven truck loads of garbage has been cleared and measures have been taken to clear the remaining garbage.

“We are doing our best to clear the garbage. We have to engage three to four trucks to clear the remaining garbage,’’ said V Nanjappa, assistant executive engineer, BBMP.

He said around 50 BBMP staff, 30 civil defence personnel and 200 policemen were deployed to ensure immersion of idols took place at the designated place at Ulsoor lake.
