Of the 41,082 potholes in Bangalore, BBMP claims to have filled 22,617 potholes by Monday evening. The remaining 18,465 potholes – mostly in Bangalore East and Rajarajeshwari Nagar zones – will be repaired in the days to follow.
A senior BBMP official said: “There is tremendous pressure on us from the political bosses to rid the roads of potholes.” He admitted that Bangalore Mirror’s campaign, which has reflected mounting public anger over potholes, was instrumental in forcing the civic agency to get to work. “We are trying our best though rain is making it difficult,” he added.
BBMP chief engineer Rangaraju said, “District in-charge minister Ramalinga Reddy and BBMP commissioner M Lakshminarayana have asked all officials to take up pothole-filling work on priority though it is raining. Engineers have been told to target roads with heavy traffic.”
BBMP East Zone Joint Commissioner K S Venkateshappa said, “Last week, there were around 6,000 potholes in east zone. So far, we have covered around 2,000 potholes. We have another 4,138 potholes to fill in one week’s time. We have initiated tender process and work will be taken up soon.”
