The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) submitted a comprehensive parking policy a year ago to the BBMP. It has now been approved by the government.
With traffic and parking woes rising in the city, the 'Proof of Parking' policy has been proposed by the DULT. In this case, when buying a vehicle, a buyer would have to produce proof of parking at the time of purchase. This means that only those who had sufficient parking space in their houses could buy a vehicle. "Proof of parking is implemented in the US and other western countries to avoid congestion and illegal parking on roads. But this was ruled out by members of the town planning committee and the council," said a senior BBMP engineer who worked on the parking policy proposal.
DULT had also proposed differential parking. In this case, a higher fee could be charged in areas well connected by mass transport system. However, This was turned down by the BBMP council.
Commissioner of DULT V Manjula said the action plan to implement the policy is being discussed. "We had sent a draft of the policy to the BBMP, which made some changes and sent it to the government. Now we have to prepare an action plan and send it to the BBMP," said Manjula.
