Brem is an Indonesian rice cake made by fermenting glutinous rice. This can be eaten as a snack if it’s in a solid form or drank as alcohol if it is in a liquid form. Brem cake is produced in Wonogiri and Madiun. The brem beverage is popular in Bali and Nusa Tenggara.
Brem is either red or white depending on the rice used. Brem beverage is very sweet and acidic with an alcohol content of 5% to 14%. Brem is believed to stimulate the blood system. It prevents dermatitis because of the presence of large amounts of Vitamin B produced by the microorganisms.
Brem beverage is popular during Hindu temple ceremonies in order to spread harmony.
