In Conversation With Parul Thakur, JW Marriott

Parul Thakur,

General Manager, JW Marriott Hotel

Do you think hospitality is a male driven industry?

Women have been a part of the hospitality sector for a very long time. Women GMs have been in the industry for over 20 years. That being said, there still aren’t enough women in this industry, I feel. There has been a very steady increase in the number of women working in the hospitality sector in the last decade and it has been encouraged by the hotel consultants. In fact, Marriott International’s goal is to increase the percentage of women to 30% over the next 3 years.

What are the challenges in this industry?

Long working hours is the biggest challenge in this industry. Especially after starting a family, it is tough to maintain a work life balance. The scenario is changes and hotels are getting more innovative and accommodative by incorporating part time work schedules, extended maternity benefits and the likes to encourage working women wherein they can continue to progress in their careers.

What are some of your favorite restaurants in the city?

Amongst the many favorites I have in the city, I love the breweries the most - Toit tops my list.

Where do you like to hang out with friends?

At home, in a casual setting where we are all comfortable and at ease.

Is there an unusual dish that you really like?

It’s not an unusual choice but I have a fondness for Sushi and Sashimi.
