Summer's here in its full glory and Bangaloreans are opting to stay off the streets in the afternoon. But for the breed of shoppers, nothing is more fun than some good old retail therapy that somehow seems to take your mind of the rising levels of the mercury.
Bangalore boasts of a number of places within the city that are nothing short of paradise for those who love their shopping. If you are one of them or know someone who conforms to that breed, here's a list of streets where shoppers thrive. Here are Bangalore's popular shopping streets:
Commercial Street
One of the very first places a visitor is taken to in Bangalore is Commercial Street, as it is considered to be a shopaholic's paradise. This straight road with its maze of by lanes has a mix of big and small brands vying for attention. While bargaining is frowned upon in the designer showrooms, it’s customary to engage in a battle of wills with most independent shopkeepers. Commercial Street has a great selection of ethnic wear, casual clothes and there are plenty of kiosks stocked with footwear, bags and jewellery. Commercial Street has several tailors who custom-make salwars, kurtas and dresses.
Brigade Road
Brigade Road has showrooms of big brands such as Calvin Klein, Levi’s, Tommy Hilfiger and Adidas. Mota Arcade houses a few unbranded stores and wholesale exhibitions, so it’s entirely possible to pick up designer brands at surprisingly low prices here. You’ll also see hawkers on the road selling sunglasses, watches and jewellery for cheap. Church Street is next door, and it has brands such as United Colours of Benetton and John Hill. Parallel to Church Street is Rest House Road, where Dubai Plaza is located. Here, you can pick up electronic goods and trendy clothes at low prices (remember to bargain!).
100 Feet Road Indiranagar
100 Feet Road is aimed at the sophisticated shopper. International brands like Forever New, Diesel, and Vero Moda and Jack & Jones make their presence felt, along with denim brands such as Levi’s, Wrangler, Pepe, and Jealous 21. Those who are very picky about the fit of their jeans wont have to travel much to find that perfect pair here. Shopping for formal clothing is easy, with brands like Allen Solly, Van Heusen, and more.
Jyothi Nivas College Road
Students of the neighbouring colleges predominantly frequent this street, and if you take one look at the price tags in most of the stores, you’ll understand why. This is shopping for those who are on a budget, but don’t want to compromise on the style factor. Most stores here sell clothes made in Bangkok, which are on trend and come in a plethora of colours and cuts. One store in particular, Casuals, has good variety. Ladies who love shoes will have a field day at Spice Girls.
Marathahalli
This area houses many factory seconds outlets, so it’s possible to pick up branded shoes, sportswear and formals at very reasonable prices. Most of the time, the defects are barely noticeable on the stock, but it’s always better to check the items thoroughly before handing over your credit card.
